Why is this medication prescribed?

Other uses for this medicine

Losartan may also be used to treat congestive heart failure.

However, it is strongly recommended that you talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this drug for your particular condition.

Dosage and using this medicine

The dose of losartan will vary from patient to patient. Please follow your doctor’s orders or the directions on the label to see what corresponds to you.

The following information includes only the average doses of losartan. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

For oral dosage form (tablets):

For high blood pressure:
Adults – 25 to 100 milligrams (mg) a day. The dose may be taken once a day or divided into two doses.
Children 6 years of age and older – Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

For high blood pressure with left ventricular hypertrophy:
Adults – 50 to 100 milligrams (mg) once a day. Your doctor may adjust your dose and add another medicine based on your blood pressure response.
Children 6 years of age and older – Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

For diabetic neuropathy:
Adults – 50 to 100 milligrams (mg) once a day. Your doctor may adjust your dose based on your blood pressure response.
Children 6 years of age and older – Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

Take losartan exactly as directed by your doctor.

Each dose should be taken with a full glass (8 ounces) of water, and either with or without food.

It is important to take losartan regularly to get the most benefit. Do not stop taking losartan without first talking to your doctor. If you stop taking the medication, your condition could become much worse.

What special precautions should I follow?

BEFORE TAKING LOSARTAN:

Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to losartan or any other medications.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Be sure to mention any of the following: diuretics (‘water pills’), indomethacin (Indocin®), and potassium supplements.

Tell your doctor if you have, or have ever had, heart failure or kidney or liver disease.

Additionally, please inform your doctor if you plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

Take the missed dose of losartan as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled one.

Please do not take a double dose of this medication to make up for a missed one.

What side effects can this medication cause?

Possible side effects from losartan may include:

headache
back pain
diarrhea
fatigue
nasal congestion

Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

diarrhea or upset stomach
muscle pain or cramps
dizziness
insomnia

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

difficulty breathing
closing of the throat
swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives
little or no urine.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What storage conditions are needed for this medicine?

Try to keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).

Moreover, be sure to throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed, and if necessary please talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

In case of an emergency/overdose

In the case of an overdose, call your local poison control center on 1-800-222-1222. However, if the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, please call the local emergency services immediately on 911.

Symptoms of an overdose may include:

dizziness
weakness
fainting
fatigue
